In the heart of Budapest’s party district, on Wesselényi Street, we dreamed up a place where the flavors of grandmothers’ cooking meet the joys of gastronomy, generously seasoned with nostalgia, good vibes, and a healthy dose of laid-back attitude.
We set out to show that classic Hungarian flavors can be stylish and endlessly delicious, without any frills, just honestly.
Within the walls of the former Szóda Bar – on a street that has seen hard times but where laughter can now be heard again – the greatest classics of Hungarian cuisine are being brought back into the spotlight. We proudly wear the name Gettó Gulyás: we are aware of the area’s past and want to remind that new values can be built from memories.
Every day, 10–15 different stews simmer at our place: from classic beef goulash to juicy venison, all the way to marrowbone and, of course, we also think of our vegetarian guests with a creative twist. You won’t find burgers or Caesar salad here – we preserve tradition, in a contemporary way.
The space itself reflects the same experience: vintage Zsolnay plates meet urban design with solid wooden tables, old pitchers, and candlelight. We don’t just use these pieces because they are beautiful and have soul, but because they leave a smaller ecological footprint, and besides, every object here has its own story.
We source our ingredients from local suppliers whenever possible. We search and explore: whether it’s paprika or the finest organ meats, quality always comes first. As owners, we have long believed that stew deserves a place on the city center’s gastronomic map. We wanted to create a place where tourists and locals alike would stop by, knowing that here they not only get a good meal but also gain an experience.
And for that to happen, you need a truly stellar team. We are proud that most of our colleagues have been with us since the beginning; this stability, shared history, and good atmosphere all contribute to making Gettó Gulyás more than just a restaurant: it’s a straightforward, family-friendly eatery.
In the kitchen, Chef Kristóf Nagy ensures there is something familiar yet exciting on every plate. Whether it’s cockscomb stew, veal paprikash, or even a good Hortobágyi pancake, the flavors are always clean but never boring. We respect the classics, but we love presenting them with a fresh perspective – and yes, here even the cottage cheese dumplings can surprise you.
And children can order anything, any way they like, because food isn’t just for adults – it’s a shared experience for everyone.
We believe that Hungarian cuisine is cool – you just have to do it right. Honestly, from the heart, and just a little differently.
